Episode 31: A Bizarre Threesome

“You’re—you’re—you’re Chastity!  You’re not Trixie anymore!” Daedalus Bolt said with a voice equal parts wonder and horror.  “You’re Chastity!”

“I’m aware,” the partitioned woman responded miserably.

“But, I don’t understand.  What’s going on?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Is this the first time it's happened?”

“No,” she admitted.  “Remember that night a few weeks ago when some of the girls were teasing me about breaking a bunch of glasses before you got to the bar?”

Daedalus nodded.

“Yeah well, I dropped them because I was walking across the floor with a full tray when suddenly, all of Chastity Bolt’s memories came rampaging into my head.  Since then it’s been an ongoing thing.  I’ve been trying to ignore it, hoping it’ll go away.”

“But I thought it's what you wanted?”

“I thought so too.  For a long time I was convinced the only way I could be happy was to discover who I’d been prior to losing my memory.  Now though, when I’m Chastity, I realize she wasn’t a very happy person.  Trixie’s life might not be glamorous or noteworthy, but at least she’s content.”

“Who are you right now?” Daedalus asked.

“I don’t even know,” she replied bitterly.  “Sometimes I’m all Trixie, sometimes I’m entirely Chastity, but primarily I’m some sick fucking amalgam of the two.”

“The phrase ‘fucking amalgam’ may encapsulate this duality better than any other,” Daedalus observed.  He could tell by the look she flashed that she didn’t appreciate his psychoanalysis.

They stood in silence for half a minute or so; he, desperately searching for something to say at the same time as he was becoming acutely aware of his nudity; she, shaking her head and muttering profanities every so often.

Finally Daedalus decided that no matter what happened next, he would be better prepared for it clothed.  He reached down for his pants and was putting them on when she spoke again, this time with a voice full of resignation:  “You know,” she said, “this couldn’t have happened at a worse time.”

“Why do you say that?” asked Daedalus, wondering when would be a good time for the onset of multiple personality disorder.

“Because,” she sighed, at first looking down but eventually bringing her eyes to his, “because I’m pregnant.”
